Harvey Granat sings Birth of the AMERICAN SONGBOOK

PITTSFIELD, MA- The Whitney Center for the Arts presents New York City's 92nd Street Y favorite Harvey Granat, Live in Concert. Harvey Granat will perform his popular cabaret Birth of the American Songbook, making the American songbook come to life for ONE NIGHT ONLY at the Whit on Monday, July 1st at 8pm.

Granat co-produced 4 time Academy Award winning songwriter, Sammy Cahn, on Broadway in WORDS AND MUSIC, which had a very successful Broadway run and toured throughout the US and abroad. His friendship with Cahn led to his serving on the board of The Songwriters Hall of Fame where he had the opportunity to befriend many talented contributors to the American songbook.

His shows are unique in that they typically focus on a composer and/or lyricist, combining his singing of their songs with fascinating “inside” stories of their lives, films and shows. Many of these stories come from his collection of original letters written by these greats of American music including Gershwin, Berlin, Porter, Rodgers, Kern and Cahn among others.

The highlight of his collection is the original manuscript of Gershwin’s THEY CAN’T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME” from the 1937 Astaire/Rogers film…Shall We Dance. It was through this manuscript, and their shared love of Gershwin, that he met Michael Feinstein who became a source of encouragement to his performing.

Located at 42 Wendell Avenue in Downtown Pittsfield, the Whitney Center for the Arts, a presenting and producing arts center, has two world-class art galleries and presents Comedies, Dramas, Musicals, Concerts, Opera Nights, Cabarets plus events for teens and children in an intimate performance venue.
